LR Hults was born in Las Vegas in 1951, on a day that a bomb test was cancelled. One of his earliest memories is of being awakened by the house shaking badly 1 enough to break glass. The cold war threat of universal destruction was a defining factor in his life. By age 16, he was convinced he would never see 40, because universal destruction was inevitable. But in 1989 the cold war ended, and he did see 40 with hope. Now in his 60th year, his American Dream is bust and the threat of universal destruction has reared its ugly head once again. But this time it's natural threat that is predictable, and the human threat is, if they are to be believed, nuclear once again. He has always been a believer in the American constitution, and a patriot, and is broken-hearted at what his beloved country has become. He is struggling on the lower fringes of the middle class, and has wondered for a long time if anyone in Washington has a clue what it's like out here in the trenches. He noticed some time ago that a phrase that was part of the daily lexicon during his youth seems to have fallen out of favor: the phrase "It's a free country."

He felt suddenly and strangely compelled to write. About We, the People. And to put it out there. He makes no claim to having all the answers, and does not claim that all of his proposals are perfect. He is not a political scientist nor is he of the "intellectual elite." He's just a guy who loves his country, who pays attention, and who believes that ultimately it will be people like him who rise up en masse to vote out the corporate lackies and elect representatives who will serve the people and institute policies that are constructive for the people. Other people are saying similar things, and thank goodness for sites like Truthout.org, where you can find them. But they are not part of the national dialogue yet. Maybe nothing will come of this, but maybe, just maybe, this American Manifesto will help elevate said national dialogue. The one thing he believes emphatically is that if we do not break the status quo and replace it with something better, we are on a slippery slope to disaster. There it is.
